Wheels, adaptation of; adjusting and lifting parts of implements.-Implements having the wheels adjustable laterally to vary the gauge for cultivating, ridging, or horse-hoe. ing are provided with self-lifting gear adapted to be moved laterally to suit all positions of the wheels. Fig. 2 shows the wheels 6 adjustably mounted on extensions 5 of the cranked axle 3. The self-lift mechanism comprises two spindles 9 adjustably clamped in a sleeve 10 which is prevented from moving endways. Spring-controlled racks 12 on the spindles 9 are adapted to be brought into engagement with pegs 13 on the wheels 6 to rock the axle 3 and thus raise the frame 1 and tine-bar 2. The racks are moved by rocking the sleeve 10 by means of a lever 16, which may be actuated by a cord. When the lift is completed the pegs engage tail-pieces 17 and knock the racks out of gear; they are returned to their inoperative position by the weight of the lever 16 or the counterbalance weight 18. For holding the tines out of the ground a bar 21 is pivotally connected to an arm 20 on the axle 3 and is provided with a hook to engage a fixed eye 22 through which the bar slides. The depth of work is regulated by placing a peg 25 in one of a series of holes in an extension 23 of the bar 21. In cases where the arm 20 is moved sideways in adjusting the wheels, the eye 22 is similarly adjustable or is made wider. Where a single lifting-rack is used, it is rigidly connected to a spindle movable endways through its bearings. In a modification, the lifting-rack and actuating-lever 16 are fixed together and mounted on the rounded end of a square bar, which is adjustable endways and is provided with a stop to limit the movement of the rack. In another arrangement, the cranked axle is extensible, being divided into two parts which are adjustably clamped in a sleeve. In another, cranks are adjustably clamped on a straight axle. The spindles 9 and sleeve 10 may be driven from the wheels and motion taken from them to rock the cranked axle.
