Abstract

Fluid-friction centrifugal pumps; worm pumps; pumping-machines and fan apparatus. - In vacuum pumps of the kind having a cylindrical rotor rotated in close proximity to the stator walls, the rotor or stator being helically grooved, the inlet is between the ends, oppositely-pitched grooves extend towards the ends, and each groove is made of diminishing cross-section from the inlet to the outlet. A longitudinal passage (not shown) in the stator wall leads to the outlet port. Fig. 1 shows a pump with a grooved stator in which the grooves diminish in width and depth from the inlet 12 towards each end. The rotor is mounted on ball or roller bearings and is driven from a shaft 22 passing through a packing gland 21. Alternatively the rotor may be driven by electromotor similar to that shown in Fig. 3 (Cancelled). The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the pump shown in Fig. 3 (Cancelled), which comprises a disc 27 rotating on ball bearings 29 in a casing having a grooved wall 23, the groove 24 diminishing in depth towards the outlet 26. The rotor is driven by means of a magnetic armature or rotor 32 enclosed in a non-magnetic gastight extension 30 of the pump casing and cooperating with a stator 33 of an asynchronous motor. All packing of the shaft 28 is thereby avoided. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
