Abstract
180,019. Parsons, H. Feb. 14, 1921. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.- Reversing-gearing of the countershaft type is combined with epicyclic reducing-gearing. The engine shaft 1, an intermediate shaft 13 driven therefrom in either direction, and the propeller shaft 14 driven from the shaft 13 through the reducing-gear, are in alignment. The reducing- gear comprises planet gears 17 carried by the shaft 14 and meshing with a fixed internal gear 19 and with a gear 16 secured to the shaft 13. A double clutch 7 slides on the feathered shaft 1 and may be engaged for direct driving with a clutch end 11 upon the shaft 13. A countershaft 5 is connected by a gear 4 and idler 3 to a gear 2 loose on the shaft 1. To bring the reversed drive into action, the clutch 7 is slid into engagement with a clutch face 9 upon the gear 2, and at the same time a gear 6 is slid upon a squared part of the shaft 5 into engagement with a gear 12 integral with the shaft 13. The clutch 7 and gear 6 are coupled by a lever 15 so as to be operated together. Specification 2766/08 is referred to.
