[Also in Divisions Fl and F2] The rotating spindle 10 of a centrifuge mounted in upper and lower bearings 11, 12 is maintained at a constant predetermined temperature by circulating oil by means of a pump 13 in contact with the upper bearing 11 and then in contact with a cooling surface formed by a portion of the inner surface 34 of a heavy-walled tubing 27 which defines an oil chamber 26 around the pump, the tubing 27 being in heat exchange relationship with an extended heat transfer surface 48 which is maintained at the predetermined temperature by circulation of a heat transfer fluid in contact therewith. The pump 13 is constituted by a downwardly tapering extended skirt 23 of a rotor 21 mounted on the spindle and spaced from a stationary sleeve 25 extending upwardly from a ring 24 and defining with the skirt 23 an annular space 31 through which the oil is centrifugally pumped and discharged against the bearing 11 via passages 22 in the rotor 21. Oil is introduced in the chamber 26 via a line 35 in fluid communication with an oil level gauge 36. The heat transfer surface 48 is constituted by spaced radial fins attached to or integral with the tubing 27 and mounted at their periphery in housings 49, 51 and a shroud 50. Air acts as the heat transfer fluid and is sucked through ports 65 and through the spaces between the fins 48 by a fan 60 mounted on a pulley 63 fast with the spindle and driven through a belt 64 by a motor. The tubing 27 and the fins 48 are made of aluminium. A ring 43 of elastomeric material provides a flexible mount for the bearing 11 to accommodate any unbalance of the rotating parts and for reducing the load on the bearing.
