Abstract

177,472. Smith, I. Nov. 18, 1920. Carding-engines.-The brush mechanism described in Specification 156,197 which receives fibres from a carding-engine in order that they may be transferred to the needle of a knitting. machine is provided with a return brush 16 adapted to co-operate with the distributor brush 15 to return surplus fibre to the main carding brush 12. The fibre is fed by brushes 10, 11 and is carded by means of two pairs of brushes 13, 14 working with the brush 12. The bristles or teeth of the brushes 10 - - 14 and 16 are bent as shown so as to be tangentially disposed while those of the brush 15 are radially disposed. The blushes are mounted in a frame 21 which is stationary when used with the circular knitting- machine shown and is provided with a main central bearing 22 for the reception of the shaft 23 of the brush 12 and with radial sockets 24 for the reception of adjustable studs 25 of yokes 26. Each yoke has an adjustable bearing 27 carrying the shafts 28 of the rollers 10, 11, 13, 14 and 16. The brush 15 is mounted on a shaft 31 journaled in bearing blocks 30 mounted in slots 29 in the frame 21. The brushes 12, 13, 14 and 15 are operatively connected by chain and sprocket gear.
