Vane governors.-A speed - governing device comprises a rotor 1, driven from the element to be governed through a shaft 2, and having vanes 17 rotating in proximity to a member 18 carrying similar vanes 17, the liquid contained between these two elements serving to transmit a torque between them, which torque is transmitted through a shaft 20 and a pulley 26 by a rope to a pulley 36 attached to spindle 6 of the throttle valve 5, and serves to close the valve against the action of a spiral spring 34, one end of which is attached to the spindle and the other end to a stationary drum 49 capable of angular adjustment by the screw 50. Variation in the speed causes variation in the torque transmitted and consequent variation of throttle opening. Numerous modifications of the apparatus comprise the use of vanes having an axial inclination, the use of cup-shaped elements instead of vanes, and the combination of the governor and valve into one element. The surfaces of the pockets formed between the vanes effectively conform to the direction of motion of the liquid.
