Abstract

176,087. Weeks, E. O. Nov. 25, 1920. Radiators, motor-car.-An arrangement for preventing waste of the circulating water or other liquid and for replenishing the radiator automatically comprises an overflow reservoir 3 open at the top to the atmosphere, a pipe 9 connecting the upper part of the radiator with the intake of the engine or other suction device, and a float valve 10, Fig. 2, controlling the connection with the pipe 9. The filling-cap 5 of the radiator fits in an airtight manner. When the water or other liquid becomes heated as the result of the working of the engine, it expands through an overflow pipe 4 into the reservoir 3, and the float 11 falls to open the upper part of the radiator to thepipe 9. The vacuum created by the engine suction or other means then causes a return of theliquid from the reservoir 3 to the radiator. A non-return valve 13 in the pipe 9 prevents a flow of air from the engine to the radiator when the engine is stopped. In a modification, Fig. 3, a float valve 10<1> controls the entrance of air through a passage 15 to break the vacuum in the radiator and pipe 9 when the liquid level rises.
