Abstract

176,050. Malleville, J. P. M. Oct. 25, 1920. Cup-leather joints; joints comprising packing operated by fluid pressure; sleeve joints.-Relates to devices for coupling two pipes together, of the kind comprising a flexible sleeve having inturned ends which surround the pipes, the pressure of the fluid within the coupling-sleeve upon these inturned ends bending to make the joint leak-proof. According to the invention the sleeve is reinforced either internally or externally, or both, in such a manner as to leave free the parts of the sleeve connecting the inturned ends to the body. Fig. 1 shows a coupling-sleeve 1 provided with internal spring rings 3<1>, which serve to retain the grip of the sleeve upon the pipe ends when the fluid-pressure decreases. Fig. 2 shows an external reinforcing-ring 4 which surrounds the body only of the sleeve 1. Reinforcing means 5, such as coils of wire, may also, as shown, be provided within the material of the sleeve 1. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the sleeve is double-walled, openings 9, 9<1> being made in the inner flexible wall 2 to allow fluid to pass into the annular space 11. Valves 10 may be provided at each of these openings, to enable the pressure in the space 11 to be maintained.
