Abstract

651,836. Pipe joints. BEYER, W. O. May 20, 1947, No. 13513. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1938. [Class 99(i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A coupling device comprises a housing 10 containing a resilient sealing member 17 subject to the fluid pressure in the pipes 11, 12 and formed with a piston portion 18 which forces a gripping ring 19 against a conical surface 14 on the housing 10, whereby it grips the pipe 12, the convergence angle # of the surface 14 being below the value defined by the formula:- where D and d are the outer and inner diameters of the part 18. Increase in fluid pressure in the pipe forces the ring 19 further into the conical part 14 and causes it to grip the pipe 12 more tightly. The member 17 is preferably made of rubber and the ring 19 is a flexible coil spring. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a modification, Fig. 1a, (Cancelled), in which the resilient member has a shoulder 22 separating the ends of the pipes 12, and is formed with two piston parts 18<SP>1</SP> forcing rings 19 to co-operate with conical surfaces on a housing 13<SP>1</SP> and grip each pipe, the parts 17<SP>1</SP> also being forced to grip the pipes by the fluid pressure. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
