Abstract

175,604. Krupp Akt.-Ges., F. Feb. 16, 1921, [Convention date]. Testing balance of rotary apparatus. - Relates to apparatus in which the part to be balanced is supported on knife-edge bearings, and consists in coupling thereto adjustable bearing-members fitted with spirit-levels. The flywheel A to be balanced has two side flanges a<1> to each of which a member B is fixed. Within the member B is rotatably mounted a disc-shaped supporting - member C having a bearing-surface c<2> at its centre and supports c<3> for the spiritlevels E. The disc C carries a scale c<4> registering with marks b<3> on a ring b<2> fixed rigidly to the member B. Into the spaces between the projections c<3> project bearing- brackets F adjustable longitudinally on their fcundations, having knife-edges f<2> adapted to form supports for the bearing-surfaces c<2>. The disc C is adjusted relatively to the member B by means of set-screws G working in nuts H mounted to rotate in any of the holes b<4> in the member B, abutting against hook-like members J which may be inserted in any of the square holes c<5> in the disc C; when adjusted the two parts can be fixed together by tightening nuts D. In use, the member B is first screwed to the part A to be tested, then, with the wheel hoisted a little above the required height, the disc C is fixed so that the spirit-levels indicate dead level. The brackets F are then moved so that the knife-edges come under the bearing-surfaces c<2> and the wheel is lowered on to them. The amount of rotation is noted, the wheel raised, the discs C adjusted within the member B through a. corresponding angle and the wheel lowered again. This is repeated until no further rotation takes place, i.e the centre of gravity lies vertically below the knife-edges. The wheel is then raised, the disc C rotated through a right-angle and again fixed. the wheel lowered and counterareights added to it until the spirit-levels indicate dead level; the centre of gravity then lies on the axis of rotation. An adapter is described for shaft-mounted wheels and a simpler modification for light wheels. Specification 3989/14 is referred to.
