Abstract

528,177. Testing balance of rotary bodies. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BRAUND, E. T. Feb. 22, 1939, No. 5888. [Class 106 (ii)] A method of testing the unbalance of a tyre comprises (a) placing the tyre in a support so that the combined tyre and support swings as a unit, (b) applying weight to the unit at a point which with the heavy spot of the tyre subtends an angle of less than 180 degrees at the fulcrum of the unit, and (c) utilizing the effect of step (b) to indicate the unbalance on a suitable scale. A horizontal spindle 2 fixed to a vertical standard 1 carries rotatably mounted upon it the support 3 for the tyre. The cylindrical surface of the support may have a slight taper. A graduated disc or scale 5 is secured to the end of the spindle 2 by a bolt 4. Vertically above its centre is a mark 6 indicating the light-spot and vertically below it is the " zero " 7. At a point less than 180 degrees away is a position 8 at which a weight 9 is to be applied. This may be secured to the rim of the support 3 by a spring clip. The tyre is placed on the support 3 and the latter allowed to rock taking up a position in which the heavy spot " is at the bottom. This or the light spot " opposite is then marked on the tyre with chalk. The weight 9 is then clipped in at the point 8 that is the end of the cut-away part 14 of the scale and the support allowed to rock until balance occurs. The position at which the weight stands on the scale indicates the amount of unbalance. In a modification, a segmented scale is fixed back of the drum 3 and a pointer moving thereover is attached to the end of a spindle passing through a hollow shaft 2 the front end of which carries a lever at the lower end of which is a weight which may be secured to the drum. In a further modification, the drum is horizontal and may be lifted off a platform to pivot about a point support. If a weight is used, this is placed on the flange of the drum in line with the light spot and the extent of the retilt towards the horizontal read off on a spirit level. If a weight is not used the level gives the tilt due to unbalance. Magnifying indicating apparatus may be used, or signal devices.
