Abstract

Feeding, winding, and registering webs.-In re-winding a web into a coil under tension transverse wrinkles in the web are nullified, and interweaving of adjacent sections of a slit web is prevented by causing it to lap over a considerable portion of the surface of a drum provided with grooves extending substantially lengthwise of its axis. Circumferential non-helical grooves may also be provided in the drum, or in a separate rcller for producing temporary minute longitudinal undulations in the web, or a grooved fixed plate may be provided for this purpose. As shown in Fig. 1, a web 21 passes over a brake roller 17, is cut into sections by score cutters 23, 24. and is wound on to a core 22 by a top pressure roller 26, a front re-winding drum 18, and a back re-winding drum 25. Longitudinal grooves 18<a> straight as shown in Fig. 19, sinuous Fig. 20, or zigzag Fig. 21, are formed in the drum 18. Fig. 23 shows additional circumferential grooves 50, which may be straight, inclined, or sinuous. The drum 18 may act as a cutter roll co-operating with the score cutters 23, Fig. 1, or with shear cutters 32, Fig. 7, and it may be arranged as a back rewinding drum or as a top pressure roller.
