Abstract
172,366. Whitaker, B. B., and Clayton, H. Aug. 7, 1920. Tipping-wagons.-In tipping-wagons of the kind described in Specification 130,711, an improved operating mechanism is provided, the main shaft of which may be operated either by hand or power. The body 2, Fig. 1, is arranged to slide on framework 3 carried on a turn-table 3<b>, the frame 3 also carrying a hand-operated cross-shaft 5 and a second cross-shaft 14 which carries a cam for operating spring clutch forks of a double toothed clutch 9, 11 alternatively to clutch, to a wormwheel 10 driven from the shaft 5, a screwed shaft 6 or a sleeve 8<c> mounted loosely thereon, the unclutched member being simultaneously locked. The sleeve 8<c> carries a pinion 8 gearing with rack teeth on the turntable, thereby turning the body in the tipping direction. Reversal of the clutches and further hand operation of the shaft 5 operates the screwed shaft 6 to drive a nut 23 thereon to move the body, whereon tipping is effected by runners engaging in the inclined portion 3<a> of the frame 3. Guide-rails 2<d> on the body normally rest on runners on the frame, and a projection 28 on the body normally enters an opening 29 in the front framing. When the tipping is effected by the engine, or by a separate motor, a double rack is provided on the turntable, having upper teeth engaging a pinion 8, Fig. 7, on the screwed shaft 6, and lower teeth engaging one of the pinions 32, 33 on a longitudinally slidable shaft 31 adapted to be clutched to the motor. The shaft 31 is moved longitudinally by a slotted member 46 on a hand-lever on the shaft 45, and when the pinion 32 is in gear, the rack 30 is rotated, the frame work 3<b> being meanwhile locked to the rack by a pin 35, Fig. 11, on a two-armed lever 36 the position of which is controlled bv connection to a handlever mounted on shaft 45. When the pinion 33 is in gear, a second pin 34 locks the framework 3<b> to the frame 4 and the rack 30 drives the shaft 6 through the pinion 8 to effect the tipping. If the driving-engine is reversible, a single rack 7<a>, Fig. 15, is used and is driven by a pinion 50 on a shaft 51 connected to the engine by chain gearing, the locking devices causing the movement of the rack 7<a> or the pinion 8 as required. The framework 3<b> may be mounted on ball-bearings t, Fig. 16, being held to allow of body tilting by a plate 3<f> contacting with lower balls t<1> and loosely attached to the frame 3<b> by screws passing through lugs 3<d> thereon.
