Abstract
172,215. MacLeod, H. W. G. Nov. 27, 1920. Anthropometrical appliances; hearing appliances. - A percussion hammer for diagnostic purposes, such as sounding the lungs and testing tendon jerk of the knee &c., comprises a malletshaped head A of metal, vulcanite, or wood, formed with convex end surfaces B, and circumferential ridges C, and fitted with a flexible handle E of whalebone, vulcanite, or metal, and of circular or oval section. In the case of wooden or vulcanite heads, a metal core L, Fig. 7, held in place by wooden or vulcanite plugs K, may be employed to give greater weight. The instrument may be used without accessories, or with a longitudinal rubber ring Q, Fig. 2, or with rubber capsules F, Fig. 3, padded with cotton-wool and held in place by rubber rings G. The cotton-wool pads in the capsules F may be moistened with hot and cold water respectively for testing the sensibility of the skin to heat or cold, the rounded end R of the handle may be used for testing the reflex of of the sole of the foot and other superficial reflexes.
