Clinometers and sighting-levels; angle-measuring instruments. - An adjusting-device for imparting slow motion to a part of a scientific instrument, such as the telescope of a sighting- level, comprises a bar or lever supported by a sliding joint at one end and by two abutments on opposite sides of the lever, one of the abutments or the sliding joint acting as the fulcrum. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lever E bears against a pin D supported by the cheeks C of the cradle in which the telescope A is pivoted at a, and is formed, at the end nearest the pin, with a spherical extremity e passing into a cylindrical aperture a<1> in an extension a<2> of the telescope. The free end of the lever abuts against an adjusting-screw G having a conical upper end engaging in a conical aperture e<1>, Fig. 5, in a plug e<2> screwed into the lever; the aperture e<1> has a cylindrical extension e<3>. The lever is kept pressed against the pin D, which acts as a fulcrum, by spring plungers F extending between the baseplate B and the telescope. The spherical part e of the lever may be replaced by a pin passing through a ring in a hollow plug in the member a<2>, or alternatively the lever may be made with a hollow end e<4> into which passes a screw e', Fig. 6, with a spherical end. Also the screw G may have a spherical extremity passing into a hollow cylindrical plug. In the form shown in Fig. 6 the pin D is carried by the extensions a<2> of the telescope and the plungers F are towards the free end of the leevr. In this arrangement the sliding joint at the end e of the lever acts as the fulcrum.
