Feeding articles from hoppers and shoots. - Apparatus for feeding small articles, such as sweetmeats, from a vertical hopper 1 to a packaging machine 21 comprises an inclined rotating cylinder 3 at the upper end of which is a partition 5 provided with an opening 6 which may be covered by a gate 9, these parts being carried by telescopic shafts 7, 8 secured to the hopper. Rotation is imparted to the cylinder by a toothed wheel 12 on the packaging device engaging an externally toothed ring 11 on the cylinder which is supported on roller bearings 33, 35. From the cylinder the articles pass into a space, the dimensions of which are adjustable, between the flanged end 18 of the cylinder and a cover plate 16 which is adjustably supported on a shaft 15 by a nut 17, the supporting shaft 15 being carried by a three-armed member 14 in the interior of the cylinder. The space between the cover 16 and the end of the cylinder is closed by an endless band 23 surrounding the cover and cylinder end and carried on adjustably mounted pulleys 24, 28, 29, the pulleys 24 being so arranged that the distance between them can be adjusted according to the size of the articles to be fed by the belt to the delivery tube 19.
