Abstract
164,333. Mercier, H. June 2, 1920, [Convention date]. Pneumatic springs. - Consists of an improved construction of pneumatic suspension for vehicles and the like, of the type having one or more auxiliary chambers the communication of which with the casing is controlled by the movement of the device, such as is described in Specification 27988/08. The auxiliary chamber 3, Fig. 1, communicates with the upper chamber 6 of the casing cylinder 2 through a conduit 5 in the piston 1, thus giving maximum resiliency when the conduit registers with the opening 4 to the chamber 3, the communication between the chambers being first closed, then opened, then closed again during each stroke of the piston. Alternatively, the piston may be made hollow and act as the auxiliary chamber, a fixed guide 9, Fig. 4, closing the piston orifice 10 except when the reduced part 9<1> of the guide registers therewith. Or a conduit may connect to the cylinder at two different levels and establish communication only when a side orifice in the piston registers with the lower opening. A regulating leak 7 is provided in each form of apparatus.
