Exhaust-silencers and the like.-A silencer for the exhaust or inlet gases of internal-combustion engines, &c., comprises a long casing 1 of uniform diameter, a tube 4 open at both ends and extending from the end 3 nearly to the other end 2 of the casing, and an opening or a tube 6 communicating with the casing at the end 3, the tube 4 having series of holes or one or more slots 5 increasing in size or width towards the inner open end. In the exhaust-silencer shown, the gases enter by the tube 6 and escape through the slotted tube 4. In a modification for silencing the air supply tu a carburettor, the outlet tube 4 is coaxial with the casing 1, which has air inlets at the end 3 around the tube 4; or the air may be admitted through the tube 4 and escape through a lateral outlet near the end 3.
