Toothed wheels are formed with narrow radial slots s between the teetht, the supports or flanks f of the teeth tapering inwardly towards the centre of the wheel to join a relatively narrow solid rim r. The object is to allow the teeth to bend and twist to distribute the load. The slots s may be of different depths.
