Abstract

160,082. Marks, E. C. R., (Scovill Manufacturing Co.). March 15, 1920. Electrode and induction furnaces.-A polyphase electrode furnace is provided with means for producing additional magnetic fields which rotate in horizontal planes and co-operate with either of the rotary fields produced within and without the circle of the electrodes by the electrode currents, so that the stirring and heating of the charge are increased. The fields may be produced by conductors 7, Fig. 3, carrying currents to the electrodes and arranged down the sides or along the bottom of the furnace, or both. Such conductors are preferably arranged within the casing 1 of the furnace, unless this casing is made of thin or ncn-magnetic metal or otherwise arranged so as not to interfere much with the magnetic field. Instead of single conductors, a number of electrically parallel conductors carrying each current may be placed vertically on the side and radially on the bottom of the furnace. As shown in Fig. 5. the additional field may be produced by coils 17, 19, fed with current from a generator independent of the source 16 of the electrode currents.
