Description

(54) A DRIVE MOTOR (71) We, ROBERT BOSCH GmbH., a German company of Postfach 50, 7000 Stuttgart 1, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention is concerned with drive motors (especially electric motors) having a housing and a drive shaft for connection to apparatus to be driven (such as a fan).
It is known to provide for such motors an end-cover and connecting means for connecting the motor to apparatus to be driven, the end-cover and connecting means being generally integrally formed by casting or drawing from a blank. Such integrally formed parts are difficult and costly to manufacture.
According to the invention, therefore, there is provided a drive motor having a housing and a drive shaft for connection to apparatus to be driven, in which an annular mounting flange is fitted to the housing around the drive shaft, and a separate, annular connecting member for connecting the motor to the apparatus is fixed to the endcover, the end-cover being of deep-drawn sheet metal and the connecting member being of plastics material.
The deep-drawn sheet metal end-cover and the plastics connecting member used in the motor according to the invention can be made cheaply and simply.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, a preferred embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a view, partly in longitudinal section, of a drive motor according to the invention Figure 2 is a partial end elevation of the end-cover used in the drive motor of Figure 1; Figure 2a is a section along the line I-I in Figure 2; Figure 3 is an end elevation of the connecting member used in the drive motor of Figure 1, and Figure 3a is a cross-section of the connecting member shown in Figure 3.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a drive motor having an electrical winding 11 in a tubular, sheet metal housing 10. The motor has a drive shaft 12 mounted in a bearing 13 which is arranged within the rim 14 of an end-cover 15. The end-cover 15 is in the form of an annular channel (Figure 2a) of deep-drawn sheet metal and is rigidly connected to the housing 10 with a caulking material between it and the housing 10. As can be seen from Figure 2, a flange-like edge 16, in which are located a plurality of apertures 17 for mounting screws, and a plurality of slot-like recesses 18, which serve for fixing a connecting member 19, are formed on the end-cover 15. The connecting member 19 consists of a plastics material and is made substantially annular. It has a cylindrical projecting outer edge 20 which serves for locating the casing of apparatus to be driven. Thus, the connecting operation and fixing of the connecting member to the motor are separate.
The connecting member 19 is fixed to the housing 10 by a cylindrical rim 22 having a plurality of hook-like projections 23 (see Figure 3 and 3a), which are forced into recesses 18 on the end-cover 15 during the mounting of the connecting member 19, and thereby serve to fix the connecting member 19 to the end-cover 15. Since the entire connecting member consists of plastics material, the projections 23 are resilient, that is to say they latch in the recesses 18 like a barbed hook to form a snap connection between the connecting member and the end-cover 15. From this it can be appreciated that the mounting of the connecting member is extremely easy to carry out.
The end-cover 15 is provided at its edge with a peripheral depression 25 in which a sealing ring is inserted during mounting, this ring serving as a seal between the motor and the casing of the apparatus to be driven, so that no dust can enter into, and no air can emerge from, the latter casing at undesired locations.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A drive motor having a housing and a drive shaft for connection to apparatus to be driven, in which an annular end-cover having an annular mounting flange is fitted to the housing around the drive shaft, and a separate, annular connecting member for connecting the motor to the apparatus is fixed to the end-cover, the end-cover being of deep-drawn sheet metal and the connecting member being of plastics material.
2. A drive motor according to claim 1, in which a caulking material is employed between the end-cover and the housing.
3. A drive motor according to claim 1 or 2, in which the end-cover is in the form of an annular channel and is fitted around a bearing for the drive shaft.
4. A drive motor according to any of claims 1 to 3, in which the connecting member has a projecting outer edge for locating the apparatus to be driven.
5. A drive motor according to any of claims 1 to 4, in which the end-cover has a plurality of passages which receive complementary latching means formed on the connecting member.
6. A drive motor according to claim 5, in which the latching means are hook-like projections on the inner rim of the connecting member.
7. A drive motor according to claim 4 or 5, in which the plurality of passages is three slots.
8. A drive motor according to claim 1, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
