Description
.(54) IMPROVEMENT;S IN AND RELATING TO VEHICLE SEATS
(71) We, P.A. RENTROP, HUBBERT AND
WAGNER . FAHRZEUGAUSSTATTUNGEN . GmbH & Co. KG., a Kommanditgesellschaft organised under the laws of Germany, of 3060 Stadthagen, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in an4 by the following statement The present invention relates to vehicle seats, for a motor vehicle for example.
According to the invention there is provided a vehicle seat assembly mounted for slidable movement on a vehicle floor, comprising a pair of parallel base rails carrying a seat portion, each base rail having - at its lower extremity two side by side adjoining 'U'-shaped terminal portions, two parallel guides each generally 'U'-shaped in crosssection rigid with the floor and each receiving the lower extremity of a respective base rail, the two free upper extremities of each 'U'-shaped guide being bent inwardly to form two inverted 'U'-shaped terminal portions engaging respective ones of the two free extremities of the 'U'-shaped terminal portions of a corresponding base rail to allow only longitudinal sliding movement between each base rail and its corresponding 'U'-shaped guide.
According to the invention there is further provided a vehicle seat assembly mounted for slidable movement on a vehicle floor, comprising a seat portion, a pair of parallel rails carrying the seat portion, a pair of parallel guides generally U-shaped in cross-section and fixed to the vehicle floor, a roller bearing located in each guide for rolling movement longitudinally of the guide and supporting the rails in respective ones of the guides, each rail having a lower terminal portion which is W-shaped in cross-section, each guide having each of its upper side walls bent over into inverted U-shaped cross-sectional configuration to envelope a respective one of the two free end portions of the W-shaped lower terminal portion of a corresponding rail, a detent mechanism mounted on at least one rail for locking the rail in zany selected one of a plurality of discrete positions relative to - the corresponding guide, and first and second safety belt anchorings rigid with respective ones of the two rails.
A vehicle seat - embodying the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vehicle seat showing only the base rail and the guide secured to the vehicle floor;
Figure 2 is a cross-section to an enlarged scale along the line II--II of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross-section generally similar to that of Figure 2 but incorporating a modification;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the arrangement shown in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a side elevation to an enlarged.
scale of a roller bearing of the seat; and
Figure 6 shows a plan view of the roller bearing of Figure 5.
As shown in Figure 1 the vehicle seat has a seat element 25 carried by two parallel base rails 2 (only one shown) each of which is slidably engaged in a respective guide 1.
Each guide 1 is secured to the floor 3 of the motor vehicle in an appropriate manner.
Each guide 1 is generally 'U'-shaped in configuration (see Figure 2) and the two upper free end portions of the guide are bent inwardly to define inverted 'U'-shaped terminal portions la and lb.
The base rail 2 at its lower end carries two mating 'U'-shaped terminal portions 2a and 2b which respectively engage the terminal portions la and lb. The extreme free ends of the terminal portions 2a and 2b can be made to make direct contact with the 'ceiling' of the inverted 'U'-shaped terminal portions la and ib or with a channel-shaped extrusion of plastics lining the inner wall of the inverted 'U'-shaped terminal portions la and lb, to reduce friction.
The provision of 'U'-shaped and inverted 'U'-shaped terminal portions- increases the area of contact between the base rail 2 and the guide 1 and as a consequence peak stresses
between the guide and the rail are reduced
in the event of a collision. The generally 'U'-shaped gtiide of Figure 2 is made in two
parts from two members each generally
'L'-shaped in cross-section, one member nesting in the other. The two members are
welded together.
The generally 'Ú'-shaped guide of Figure 3
is made from - a single integral member.
A roller bearing 6 rests on the base of each
generally 'U'-shaped guide 1 and supports
the lower extremities of the 'U'-shaped term
inal portions 2b and 2a of the base- rail.
This facilitates the longitudinal displacement
of the base rail 2 along the guide - 1. The
roller bearing 6- includes an elongate bearing
cage made from metal strip. Openings 8 and 9
provided at opposite end portions of the strip
accommodate respective ones of two gener
ally diabOlo-shaped rollers 10, 11. At two
longitudinally spaced intermediate portions
of the cage there are two pressed-out stops
12 and 13 which are arranged to engage an
abutment 13 on the underside of the base
rail and located mid-way between the opposite
ends of the rail. The two stops thus allow
limited movement between the base rail 2
and the bearing. However, once the abutment
moves into engagement with a stop 12 or
13 further movement can only take place
by overcoming the sliding friction between
the rollers, the guide and the base rail.
A bar 15, which may form part of the
generally 'U'-shaped guide or be a separate
component rigid with the guide, has a row
of longitudinally spaced detent apertures
15a. A bracket 17 rigid with the base rail
pivotally supports a lever having teeth 1 6a for engagement with selected ones of the
detent apertures. By making the teeth 1 6a engage selected apertures, the base rail and
therefore the seat is locked against longi
tudinal displacement.
A handle 19 (see Figures 1 and 4) is secured
to lever 16 to enable the lever to be raised
and release the teeth from engagement with
detent apertures. The seat is thus freed for
longitudinal displacement. A spring 20
biases the lever towards the bar so that when
the handle is released the teeth 1 6a will move
towards the bar. If the teeth are aligned with
detent apertures the teeth will engage them
and lock the seat. If the teeth are not aligned
with the apertures the seat can be shifted
slightly until alignment occurs whereupon
the teeth will engage the apertures and lock
the seat.
Each base rail carries a safety belt fastening
5, so that when the safety belt is fitted it
will move with the seat upon longitudinal
adjustment of the seat. This ensures the same
restraining force with respect to the torso
of the vehicle occupant whatever the adjusted
position of the seat.
