Description

(54) HYDRAULIC CHECK (71) We, TI JAMES GIBBONS LIMITED, of Church Lane, Wolverhampton, WV2 4BX, a British Company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to hydraulic checks, such for example as may form part of an automatic door closer.
It is desirable for many purposes, as in an automatic door closer, that on the check stroke of the hydraulic check the resistance offered increases.
According to this invention, an hydraulic check comprises a cylinder and a piston fitted with valves which open in one direction of piston travel to allow relatively free flow of hydraulic fluid from one side of the piston to the other and close on the check stroke, and the cylinder is cup-shaped being closed at its base end and open at the other, there being a closure plug with a piston rod bearing fitted in the open end of the cylinder, and the cylinder has a tapering bore whereof the internal diameter gradually decreases from the open end throughout the cylinder length to the base end, the piston moving towards the base end in the check stroke. The taper will be selected according to the desired change in resistance.
One construction of hydraulic check of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is an axial section through the check.
The hydraulic check comprises a cupshaped cylinder 10 having a screw-threaded mounting stub 11 at its base end, a closure plug 12 screw-threaded into the open end of the cylinder. a piston 13 slidable within the cylinder 10, and a piston rod 14 rigid with the piston and extending through a sealed bearing 15 in the closure plug 12.
The piston 13 has passages 16 extending through it and these are controlled by balls 17 held in position by a spring clip 18, the balls being at the ends of the passages 16 nearer the base end of the cylinder 10.
The internal diameter of the cylinder 10 decreases gradually from the open end towards the base end so that the cylinder bore is tapered.
A bleed valve 19 is provided in the plug 12.
On the setting stroke of the check, the piston 13 moves to the right as seen in the drawing and oil which fills the check flows relatively freely through the passages past the ball valves 17 and increasingly, as the piston moves, around the outside of the piston.
On the return or check stroke of the piston, the ball valves close off the passages so that the only path for the oil is around the outsidie of the piston and since the cylinder bore tapers towards the base end of the cylinder the resistance to oil flow increases gradually as the piston travels towards the base end. It will be noted that the cylinder space 10a in which the pressure gradually increases is remote from the plug 12 and sealed bearing 15.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. An hydraulic check comprising a cylinder and a piston fitted with valves which open in one direction of travel of the piston to allow relatively free flow of hydraulic fluid from one side of the piston to the other and which close on the check stroke, whereof the cylinder is cup-shaped being closed at its base end and open at the other, there being a closure plug with a piston rod bearing fitted in the open end of the cylinder, and the cylinder has a tapering bore whereof the internal diameter gradually decreases from the open end throught the cylinder length to the base end, the piston moving towards the base end in the check stroke.
2. An hydraulic check according to claim 1, wherein the valves comprise flow passages

2. An hydraulic check according to claim 1, wherein the valves comprise flow passages in it controlled by balls retained in the piston by a spring which allows the balls to move away from the passage ends to allow the relatively free flow of hydraulic fluid.
3. An hydraulic check substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
4. An automatic door closer including an hydraulic check as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3.
