Abstract

157,948. Corsalli, W. Sept. 18, 1913, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-In an open hearth furnace for the manufacture of iron and steel, the flames are directed along one side of the furnace, and the products of combustion are drawn off through a downcast flue f, passing through a slagcollecting chamber g and a regenerator m on their way to the chimney. Gas for combustion is supplied through a conduit b, within which is an air pipe d, and the regeneratively-heated air is delivered through ports c arranged around the gas port. The stream of gas thus surrounds and is surrounded by a stream of air, and burns at two points B<1>, B<2> with an oxidizing flame. If a reducing flame is desired the relative arrangement of the gas and air ports is reversed. The ports are situated towards one side of the end wall, so that the flames are directed down the side of the furnace, and assist in agitating the molten metal on the hearth. The opposite end wall is set back from the outlet flue f to provide a space for brass-melting crucibles t, and other crucibles u for steel may be heated on the bridge wall. The slag chamber has a tap-hole h and a door i through which materials may be added to the slag. When it is desired to reduce metals, for example titanium, from the slag, burners k may be fitted. The hot waste gases flow over the surface of the slag in the chamber, keeping it molten, and then pass through the reversing- valve l to the regenerator, and thence through a second reversing-valve n to the chimney.
