(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO AGRICULTURAL TOOL CARRIERS (71) We, KEITH WILLIAM BURTON, LORD IAN BURTON and ROBERT KEITH BURTON, all British subjects, of Leasingham Hall, Leasingham, Lincoln, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to a tool carrier for agricultural tools.

In this country there is a ten foot width limitation on vehicles using public roads and preferably the width should not be more than nine foot. However, agricultural tool carriers for example chisels or shovels may be as wide as twenty-four foot. At present conventional tool carriers have hinged outrigger portions which may be raised into a substantially vertical position to reduce the width to the required limitation. The lifting is usually effected by hydraulic cylinders mounted on the frame but mechanical means may be provided.

The disadvantages of conventional arrangements are the extra cost of the hydraulics necessary or the inconvenience of the mechanical means.

According to the present invention we provide an agricultural tool carrier comprising two elongate sections hinged together so that the width of the carrier may be reduced from an extended operative position to a transport position by folding the two sections together in a horizontal plane so as to assume a position in which a longitudinal side of one section lies adjacent a longitudinal side of the other section.

Preferably the tool carrier is a tool bar and may be locked in a first open position in which the bar sections are inclined to one another to form a substantially V-shape when viewed in plan or in a second open position in which the bar sections are aligned.

The invention will not now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate one em- bodiment of the invention and in which: Figure 1 shows a tool bar in a folded position; Figure 2 shows the tool bar in a first open position; and Figure 3 shows the tool bar in a second open position.

In the drawings a tool bar 1 comprises two tool-carrying sections 2 and 3 which are hinged together at the front 4. The front 4 also includes a frame member 5 having hitch positions 6 which allow the tool bar 1 to be towed behind a tractor or like vehicle.

As shown in Figure 2 the sections 2 and 3 each include a pivot 7 and a hole 8 whereby the tool bar 1 may be locked in a first position. In this first position a stablising bar 9 is provided between the sections. In a second, straight line position, as shown in Figure 3 the sections 2 and 3 are locked to the frame member 5 by locking pins 10.

In use, when ploughing or the like has been completed, the locking pins are released and the tractor moved forward. The forward movement causes the sections 2 and 3 automatically to take up this position shown in Figure 1.

Although not illustrated the sections 2 and 3 may be locked together in the transport position For ploughing or the like the sections 2 and 3 are readily opened out into their extended positions.

The invention has been particularly described with reference to a tool bar but it is understood that the invention is applicable to any form of wide tool carrier. In the case of larger tool carriers wheels may be provided at the centre to aid in transportation.

Also although a single tool bar of two sections has been disclosed by way of example it is understood that the invention is also apply cable to a plurality of interconnected foldable tool bars disposed one behind another.
