Description

(54) SEALING MEMBER (71) I, JAN JAKOB DIJKSTERHUIS, a Dutch citizen, of Boslaan 7, Roden, the Netherlands, do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: - The invention relates to a sealing member for sealing the gap between a frame and a door or window.
According to the present invention there is provided a sealing member for sealing the gap between a frame and a door or window including an elongate section having a relatively wide groove filled with a material which greatly expands when heated so as to open the gap and, beside the wide groove, a relatively narrow groove in which the base of an elastic sealing strip is located both grooves opening to the same side of the section and the sealing strip having a sealing tongue arranged substantially entirely to cover the wide groove when the door or window is closed.
By reason of the sealing strip covering the expandable material, the expandable material is protected and is not damaged on opening and closing of the door or window. Also, as the groove open to the same side of the section, the expandable material is quite quickly heated to expand and to close the gap in contrast with a previously suggested arrangement where the expandable material is in a groove which is closed at the side to which the sealing strip extends.
Preferably, according to the invention, the elongate section is of a metal, in particular a light metal, for obtaining rapid heat conduction. Because the material which is expanded by heating is, in use, open towards the gap its temperature will rise quickly upon an increase in the immediate ambient temperature. However, the expandable material is substantially covered by the sealing tongue upon closing of the door or window.
Preferably, the outer surface of the expandable material is covered by an aluminium foil, e.g. in the form of a self adhesive tape. This protects the expandable material against moisture while allowing good heat conduction over its entire length.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 and 3 are sectional views of two modifications.
Fig. 1 shows a casing 1 for a door 2. A section 3, consisting of aluminium, is positioned in a groove of the door frame, said groove having been cut by milling the side of the casing. Between the casing 1 and door 2 is a gap 4. The section 3 has a wide groove 5 and a narrow groove 6. In the wide groove an expandable material 7 is present and the narrow groove 6 receives the base of an elastic sealing strip 8. The latter has such a width that it can cover the expandable material 7 nearly totally.
The outer surface of the material 7 is coated with an aluminium foil 29.
In case of the modification shown in Fig.
2 the groove 16 for the base of the elastic sealing strip 18 is provided between two wide grooves 15 and 15' both containing expandable material such that the strip 18 can cover nearly totally only one groove 15 and thereby the expandable material 17 present in it. With this embodiment both grooves 15, 15' for the expandable material open towards the gap 14.
In case of the embodiment according to Fig. 3 the base of the sealing strip 29 is received in a groove 26 being positioned between one groove 25 for containing expandable material 27 which opens towards the gap 24 and another groove 25' containing expandable material 27' which is not open towards the gap 24 but is instead open towards the casing.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A sealing member for sealing the gap between a frame and a door or window including an elongate section having a relatively wide groove filled with material which greatly expands when heated so as to open the gap and, beside the wide groove
