Description

(54) APPARATUS FOR USE IN EMPTYING A TIPPABLE OPEN TOP BOXLIKE BODY (71) I, BARGE BUNGER, a Danish Subject, of DK-5793 Hby-Fyn, Denmark, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to an apparatus for use in emptying a tippable open box-like body for vehicles of the kind (hereinafter referred to as the kind set forth) in which a hinged body part comprises a body side and which part is hinged to the rest of the body in such a manner, that is own weight about the hinge brings about a moment, that acts to close the body side with the bottom of the box-like body.
According to the present invention I provide apparatus for use in emptying a tippable open box-like body of the kind set forth, characterized in that, it has a lifting bar which can be swung in a substantially vertical plain round a hinge from an essentially horizontal starting position, in which staring position a free end of the lifting bar is adapted to engage an eye of a top-part of the hinged body part and a clamp projecting from the lifting bar engages under a member which is connected to a lower body part and that the hinge of the lifting bar during the swinging of the bar is freely movable towards and away from the box-like body.
The invention will be more fully understood from the description given below by way of example with reference to the Figures of the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic that shows a known apparatus during emptying of a vehicle of the kind set forth.
Figures 2A and 2B are schematics that show an apparatus respectively of the invention before and dunag the emptying, and Figure 3 shows another embodiment similar to tllat of Figure 2A and 2B.
In Figure 1 a vehicle of the kind set forth a tippable open top box body shown generally at 10 of the kind set forth is shown in Figure 1. The body 10 is divided along a diagonal 101 to form an upper body part 102 hinged at 103 and to a lower body part 104. The hinge 103 extends along the upper edge of the box body at the upper end of the diagonal 101.
At the lower end 10 of the diagonal 101 the lower body part 104 is hinged to a chassis 6 supporting the box body.
When a load for example of sugar cane is to be unloaded from the box body first the upper and then also the lower body part is tipped by means of a hoist 11 acting at edge 107.
The time spent from the moment when the body part is caught till it reaches the position shown in Figure 1A is saved when using the apparatus of the invention.
In Figure 2A apparatus comprises a mobile chassis 1 that carries a vertical stanchion 2, to the upper end of which a lifting bar 3 is hinged at 4, which lifting bar 3 can be swung up about the hinge 4. Between the vertical stanchion 2 and the lifting bar 3 is located a piston-cylinder-unit 5, by means of which the lifting bar 3 can be lifted from an essentially horizontal starting position.
Near the stanchion 2 the lifting bar 3 carries a bar clamp 6 the distance d1 of which from the free end 7 of the lifting bar 3 exceeds the width d2 of the box body 10. The stan chion 2 is juxtaposed with a transverse bar 21 connected to a drive chassis 13A and that is able to move the chassis 1 on its wheel 1A.
The modus operandi of the apparatus is as follows -from the starting position shown in Figure 2A the apparatus is driven towards the box body 10 as the free end 7 of the bar is led through a clamp or an eye 9 at the upper side of that part of the body which is top-hinged by means of hinge 10, until the bar clamp 6 engages under a member which is firmly connected to the other part of the body, by way of example the said hinge 10,. The lifting bar 3 is then lifted as the pistoncylinder-unit 5 is activated. At the turning of the lifting bar 3 round the axis 4 the free end 7 of the bar in the eye 9 will lift the upper body part 102 so that same is swung round its hinge 103. Simultaneously the bar clamp 6 of the lifting bar 3 will lift the hinge 10 and in doing so tip the lower part of the body 104 round its axis 105, as appears from Figure 2B. As the hinge 103 must follow an arc of a circle about the tipping axis 105, the road-wheels 12Aofthe drive chassis 1 3A must not be braked, because the apparatus must be able to drive on its base, while tipping the box body 10.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 3 the apparatus does not include a driveable chassis but has a stanchion 2 instead that is turnable about a bearing 12B at the foot of the stanchion 2 by means of a piston-cylinder unit 13B. From a starting position in which the stanchion 2 is sloping away from the box body 10, the stanchion is moved counterclockwise by the unit 13B until the end of the bar 7 and the clamp 6 engages the box body.
Before the lifting bar 3 is lifted by means of the unit 5, the unit 1 3B is set to neutral, so that the stanchion 2 can tip freely round the tipping bearing 1 2B and thereby permit the hinge 103 of the upper body part 102 to swing about the tipping axis 105 of the lower body part 104.
The distance between the hinge axis 4 of the bar and the bearing 12B of the stanchion depends on the dimensions of the box like body, and the bearing 12B may by way of example be buried at the side of the roadway on which the body vehicle is standing during the emptying.
In using the apparatus shown the emptying of the box bodies may be made essentially quicker than in using known apparatus. This is especially important in cases where body vehicles which have to be emptied, follow each other in convoy for which reason it is wanted to reduce the waiting time as much as possible.
It is noted that two different mobile chassis 1 are shown in Figures 2A, 2B. In the chassis of Figure 2A the stanchion 2 is supported by the drive chassis 13A at its rear part by virtue of coupling-up clamp 211 that can allow the tractor to swing about said coupling by a full 360 degeres of arc.
