Abstract
155,970. Gill, W. Nov. 17, 1919. Beam compasses.-A device is mounted on a beam for holding a pencil &c., the said device having inherent or provided flexibility and carrying a friction roller for fine adjustment. The form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 has inherent flexibility, and consists of a wire rectangle b which is bent to the form of a wide-angled V and has a loop b<1> through which the pencil &c. passes. The long sides of the rectangle are joined by uprights b<2>, b<3>, the former carrying a pivoted plate b<1> against which the pencil &c. bears. A friction roller b<5> is mounted on one of the short sides of the rectangle and bears against the beam. In the form shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the device is formed by press tool work from sheet metal and comprises a frame having three faces B<1>, B<2>, the upper and lower faces B<2> having apertures B<3> to receive the pencil &c. A plate B<4> backs up the pencil and has lugs B<6> so that by turning it round a smaller pencil can be held. A roller B<5> is pivoted in the frame and flexibility is provided by a spring d. In a further modification, the device is formed by press-tool work, and has two arms projecting along the front face of the beam, each arm carrying a friction roller.
