Abstract
The mechanical seal has a revolving slip ring made of carbon which is pressed against a fixed mating ring (2) made of metal by a spring. The sliding surface of the mating ring is provided with approximately straight ground grooves (5) with a peak-to-valley height of 0.1-0.8 mu m which extend in the same direction and at the same angle to the radial direction from the inner edge (3) to the outer edge (4) of the sliding surface and, as measured at the circumcircle, has a flatness deviation of less than 6 mu m. In operation, the ground grooves have the effect of pumping back leakage oil. The loss of oil through leaks when stationary is insignificant. The formation of the grooves as ground grooves makes the production process simple and economical. <IMAGE>
