Tanks.-In the preliminary treatment of sewage, the liquid is passed over a floor or screen d, Fig. 2, in a catchpit e, across a sloping floor, and then upwards through a screen d<1> in a catchpit o. Sand and detritus falling through the screen d and flocculent matter retained by the screen d' pass respectively into ejector chambers h, r, from which they are discharged intermittently by air or other fluid admitted under pressure, preferably through automatically-operated timed valves. Two or more catchpits e arranged in parallel and each provided with an ejector may be used. The screen d<1> may be inclined. The chamber r may be formed as a pipe with a plurality of inlets for the sewage matter and the fluid under pressure. To cleanse the screen d<1>, the liquid above is allowed to pass downwards to the ejector. In the modified apparatus shown in Fig. 4, the first catchpit is omitted and duplicate apparatus is used in parallel. The sewage passes from the catchpit e through a settling-chamber ! l and is discharged by a centrifugal pump m driven by a motor o. A valve p allows the sediment in the chamber l to pass back into the catchpit. An electric motor q drives a compressor r delivering air to a receiver s, from which it is supplied as required to the ejector.
