Abstract

1537282 Azo dyestuffs IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Nov 1976 [17 Dec 1975] 51616/75 Heading C4P The invention comprises azo dyestuffs free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups having the general formula wherein R is H, halogen, CN, nitro, OH or amino or is an organic radical, R<SP>1</SP> is H, optionally substituted hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radical or is optionally substituted amino, Y is -N(R<SP>2</SP>)COR<SP>3</SP>, NHCOR<SP>4</SP> or NHCOOR<SP>5</SP>, wherein R<SP>2</SP> is optionally substituted alkyl, R<SP>3</SP> is optionally substituted alkyl or aryl, R<SP>4</SP> is alkyl having more than 2 carbon atoms, R<SP>5</SP> is the same as R<SP>4</SP> and also may be an optionally substituted alkyl or aryl group, K<SP>+</SP> is a cationic group, X- is an anion and ring A may be further substituted or bear a fused benzene ring. Preferably Y, which is para to the azo group, contains at least 5 carbon atoms, R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, R<SP>1</SP> is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl and K<SP>+</SP> is a cyclammonium, e.g. pyrridinium, α-, #- or ypicolinium or quaternary ammonium group. They are prepared by diazotizing a Y-substituted aniline and coupling to a pyridone of the general formula wherein Y, R, R<SP>1</SP>, K<SP>+</SP> and X<SP>-</SP> are as above. The dyes dye polymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile and of dicyanoethylene, and acid modified polyesters and polyamides in yellow shades.
