Abstract

1536540 Automatic control ELECTRICAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION Ltd 7 April 1976 [28 Jan 1975] 3713/75 Heading G3N The speed of a vehicle (industrial truck or tractor) which is automatically guided to follow a predetermined path (e.g. a leader cable) is controlled in response to deviations from the path and the alignment of guidance wheels with respect to a datum position, the speed being decreased when the deviation exceeds a predetermined value and increased when the wheel alignment is within predetermined limits. The deviation and alignment signals are analogue voltages which are compared with adjustable threshold values in differential amplifiers, Fig. 2 (not shown). The arrangement is such that an excessive deviation switches an unspecified speed controller to a "slow" condition, the guidance system (not described in detail) turns the steerable wheels to correct the deviation, and straightens them when this has been done, and, when the straight alignment of the wheels has been maintained for, say 2 seconds, the controller is switched to "fast". A separate timer prevents speed changes at closer than 7 second intervals. The alignment system maintains the vehicle at slow speed when a curve is negotiated. The control circuits are fully described.
