Abstract

1535727 Pressure die casting DANIELS STROUD Ltd 11 Feb 1976 [28 Feb 1975] 8599/75 Heading B3F [Also in Division B5] In a mould opening and clamping unit for a die casting machine comprising a toggle device 5, 6 for the relatively fast opening/closing part of the stroke of the unit and a direct acting hydraulic device 14 for applying a clamping force to the mould halves 11, 12, there is provided a piston 20 which can be adjusted to ensure that for different mould heights/thickness the volume of clamping fluid in space 23 remains small. The toggle device 5, 6 is pivoted at 8, 9 to the movable mould plate 7 and piston 14 respectively so that an hydraulic piston/ cylinder 3, 1 can drive the links 5, 6 into a co-linear relationship upon mould closure. Hydraulic fluid can then be forced via a duct 26 into the space 23 between the piston 14 and the second piston 20 to drive the piston 15 to the left to apply a clamping force. The piston 20 is held under tension by pressurized fluid in an annular chamber 27 and is retained against movement by a nut (22, Fig. 2, not shown) abutting against the cylinder 14. To accommodate moulds of different heights the piston 20 may be moved axially of the cylinder 14 by slackening the nut and removing or introducing fluid into the chamber 27 via manually operated valves (33, 34, Fig. 2). A fail-safe device for detecting foreign bodies in the mould or moulds may be provided and may comprise a mechanically operated rod having an electrical sensing unit which is actuated upon the piston 14 being driven to the right during the closing stroke as a result of the toggle action meeting a resistance.
