Abstract

1535657 Reacting an alkyd resin with (meth) acrylic acid AKZO NV 6 July 1977 [13 July 1976] 28379/77 Heading C3R [Also in Division C2] A process for the preparation of an ethylenically unsaturated ester comprises (a) reacting acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid with a hydroxy compound having at least one primary hydroxyl group (e.g. an alkyd resin) in the presence of an acid esterification catalyst and a water-imiscible organic solvent, (b) at the conclusion of the esterification reaction adding a lithium compound to the esterification mixture to inactivate the catalyst, and (c) distilling the mixture, at least partially to remove volatile constituents and excess (meth)acrylic acid, leaving the ester in the distillation residue.
