Abstract

1530347 Transducers SIEMENS AG 17 Sept 1976 [17 Sept 1975] 38702/76 Heading H4J A transducer comprises an oscillator (e.g. piezoelectric or magnetostrictive) element arranged to drive a layer to which is secured an annular loading element, the thickness of the layer being equal to a quarter of the wavelength in the material of the layer corresponding to the resonant frequency of the oscillator element or an odd multiple thereof. In the echo sounder described an aluminium loading ring 3 produces an annular node in the layer 2 which is formed by cementing together with polystyrene or epoxy lacquer hollow silicon dioxide beads. This results in the production of a narrow (ultrasonic) beam of flare angle about 5 degrees.
