Abstract

1527699 Production of 17-acetals of 3-alkoxyester - 2,5(10) - dien - 17 - ones MITSUBISHI CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 April 1977 [19 April 1976 7 Dec 1976] 15396/77 Heading C2U Steroids of the formula (wherein R 1 and R 2 are each C 1-10 alkyl or R 1 and R 2 together are C 2-10 alkylene, and R 3 is C 1-10 alkyl) are prepared by reacting steroids of the formula with sodium or potassium, liquid ammonia and a tertiary alcohol in the presence of tetrahydrofuran, dioxan or tetrahydropyran as solvent, these materials being used in such proportions that the starting steroid is substantially dissolved in the reaction system and that 2 liquid phases are formed, the upper consisting mainly of Na or K and liquid ammonia and the lower consisting mainly of solvent, liquid ammonia and starting steroid and being coloured by the presence of alkali metal. The reaction is preferably effected in the presence of an aliphatic and/or alicyclic hydrocarbon, e.g. of 5 to 8 carbon atoms. Examples are given, and comparative examples, in which the specified conditions are not necessarily adhered to, are also provided.
