Abstract
1523585 Installing offshore structures R W BREWERTON 28 Oct 1975 [28 Oct 1974 1 July 1975] 46468/74 and 27729/75 Heading E1H To maintain the second moment of area of the water plane of an offshore structure and thereby its stability whilst its base part is being submerged, the offshore structure includes a caisson which supports the deck at its predetermined working height above the water level whilst the base part is being submerged. Subsequently the deck is attached to one or more support columns and the caisson is either sunk to the base part or removed for re-use. The base may be used as storage tanks. In one embodiment of the offshore structure a caisson 6 is located between support column 3 which extend upwardly from a base 2 and slidably pass through apertures in a deck 4. The deck 4 is supported at its predetermined height above the water level by. a support structure 5. After the base 2 has been ballasted and sunk on to the sea bed, the deck 4 is connected to the columns 3 and the caisson 6 is removed. In modifications of this embodiment (not shown) the base 2 is annular and surrounds a caisson which is finally sunk to the sea floor to form part of the base of the structure. In another construction (Figure 9) a gravity platform comprises three hollow base parts 12 which are interconnected by perforated walls 13. Each part 12 supports a caisson formed by upper and lower parts 14b, 14a and a support column 15 extends upwardly through a respective caisson 14 and a collar 18 connected to a deck 17. The deck is finally attached to the columns 15 by cooperation of the collars 18 with flanges 16 on the upper ends of the columns 15.
