Abstract

1519609 Direct arc furnaces ASEA AB 11 Dec 1975 [12 Dec 1974 (2)] 50796/75 Heading H5H A D.C. direct arc furnace having a hearth electrode, a working electrode 1 and a starting electrode 9, is started by current passing through a starting electrode 9 introduced via a slag pouring aperture 7. The starting electrode may be pivoted about a vertical axis as shown in Fig 1, about a horizontal axis (Figs. 5, 7, not shown) may be mounted between rollers 18, Fig. 3, for linear movement or mounted on a trolley (Figs. 6, 8, not shown). An aperture closing shutter 11 may be mounted on the electrode or otherwise. A door (8, Fig. 2, not shown) closes the opening in the absence of the starting electrode. A tip 12 of graphite or other carbonaceous material is screwed onto a supporting solid rod or tube 10, Fig. 1. The support may be a tube with a concentric internal tube defining cooling fluid passages (Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, not shown). The starting electrode may be moved hydraulically, pneumatically or by a variety of mechanical means.
