Abstract

1517996 Rotary positive-displacement fluidmachines NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 25 May 1976 [27 May 1975] 21606/76 Heading F1F In an I.C. engine for a motor vehicle, an exhaust gas component sensor 46 senses the concentration of a chemical component such as oxygen, a hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or nitric oxide in the exhaust gases and generates a signal representing the concentration. The signal is compared with a reference signal, corresponding to a predetermined concentration in a control circuit 48 and if it has a higher or lower voltage than the reference signal, a control signal is generated which operates a control valve unit 50 which controls the ratio of air to fuel supplied to air/fuel mixture supply means 30 and hence the air/fuel ratio of the air-fuel mixture produced in the supply means 30. The control valve unit 50 may comprise at least one solenoid valve either of the type having only two operating positions (open or closed) or the type operable over a range of positions. A circuit 52 may be provided which can detect deceleration of the vehicle and adjust the voltage of the reference signal in the control circuit to lower the predetermined air fuel ratio. The engine may also comprise a thermal reactor 36 for oxidizing the combustible residues in the exhaust gases, an air injection system comprising a pump 40 and valve 42 for discharging air into the exhaust ports 26 of the engine, an anti-backfire valve 44, an air cleaner 34 and a catalytic converter situated upstream of a muffler or mufflers in the exhaust pipe 38.
