Abstract

1517539 Joint-making packing ENGINEERING COMPONENTS Ltd 23 July 1976 [30 July 1975] 31820/75 Heading F2B An I.C. engine cylinder head gasket comprises a metal (steel) sheet 4 having cylinder bores 5 and bolt apertures 6 respectively bounded by flanged metal (copper) eyelets 8, 9, secured thereon by pressing and/or riveting, and having each of the oil and water passageways 7 bounded by a sealing strip of cured elastomeric material on one or, as shown, both sides of the gasket. The elastomeric sealing strip may be applied by a printing process and cured in situ. In the uncompressed state, the thickness of the elastomeric sealing strip is 15 to 30% thicker than the flange thickness of the individual eyelets on each side of the sheet 4. Alternatively, e.g. for making sample gaskets, preformed cured elastomeric strips could be suitably attached to the metal sheet 4 around the oil and waterways 7 by adhesive. The flange thicknesses of the eyelets may be the same or may be different to vary, i.e. increase/decrease, the loading of selected points to minimize distortion on cylinder head arrangements having asymmetric stress distribution.
