Abstract

1516498 Packaging THURNE ENG CO Ltd 9 July 1975 [14 July 1974] 1740/74 Heading B8C A machine for inserting an object, e.g. a chicken 6, into a bag 8, comprises a holder for a stack of bags 8, a support 1 for the object which is movable between a forward position where, in use, it is within a bag 8 and the retracted position shown. Pushing means is provided for pushing the object forwards from the support 1 into a bag 8 which is pushed forwardly from the holder. Means 25 is also provided for pressing the bag 8 when filled into contact with the pushing means which has associated therewith a suction device for removing air from the bag 8, closing means being provided for closing the bag 8 after withdrawal of the pushing means. The pushing means may comprise a single pusher or two pushers 12, 14. As described, one pusher 12 pushes the object from the support 1 after reaching its forward position into the bag 8 through a pivoted flap 4 which completes the opening of the bag 8, an air jet from a nozzle 7 initiating opening. Pusher 12 pushes the object, and with it the bag 8, through means 25 on to a table 30. The second pusher 14 moves through the middle of the first which is then withdrawn as is the support 1. The means 25 may include an annular brush having its tufts directed inwards, or a plurality of resilient plastics fingers each fixed to a respecting toothed wheel which are driven by a belt. The fingers are pivoted thereby through a limited angle to act as an iris diaphragm. The pusher which is contacted by the bag by the means 25 is rotatable so as to twist the bag to facilitate closing thereof. Grippers 32 clamp the twisted neck and remove the bag to a station where an adhesive tape tie is fixed thereto to complete sealing.
