Abstract

1514323 Preparing catalysts by sputtering, dehydrogenation catalysts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 May 1976 [23 May 1975] 22773/75 Heading B1E Supported catalysts are made by sputtering catalytic material or a catalyst component onto the surface of refractory oxide particles compatible therewith and consolidating the sputtered particles to form an aggregate. The particles may be crystalline and/or be catalytic and the sputtered deposit may wholly or partly coat them and may be expitaxial. The sputtered particles may be mixed with other particles which may be sputtered or unsputtered before aggregation. In examples platinum is sputtered onto an alumina powder, the sputtered powder is suspended in aq. aluminium nitrate, the suspension is made alkaline and aged, the resulting precipitate is washed, extruded, dried, calcined, mixed with fused alumina chips and reduced. After being used in the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons the catalyst is regenerated by oxidative decarbonization followed by reduction.
