Abstract

1513963 Phase detectors BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 21 July 1976 [24 April 1975] 16951/75 Heading H3A A phase detector suitable for phase lock control of a local oscillator in a superhet receiver (see Fig. 2) comprises an arrangement 20, 21 for circulating marker digits around signal paths of the same length at speeds respectively dependent on input, reference frequencies at 5, 7 and first and second detection circuits G7, G8 (Fig. 3) responsive to the relative spacing between the marker digits for generating phase lag and phase lead output signals respectively. The paths may be defined by shift registers 20, 21 and the detectors G7, G8 compare the contents of each stage of the first (or second) with the contents of the preceding stage in the second (or first) shift register for providing phase lag or lead signals to an error voltage generator 26. A third detector G9 compares the contents of each stage of one register with contents of stages lying two behind in the other register to provide a frequency error signal. In response to the appearance of a frequency error signal, a combination of fine and coarse memories 28, 29 apply a frequency error signal of the right polarity to the generator 26, to attain frequency equality within one period of the reference waveform at the end of which the registers 20, 21 are reset.
