Abstract

1445572 Radar proximity fuze DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 22 Nov 1973 [6 Dec 1972] 56322/72 Heading F3A [Also in Division H4] A receiver for detecting signals which are phase-modulated according to a digital code sequence includes a decoder for applying a sequence of phase shifts, complementary to those given by the code sequence, to received signals. As applied to a radar proximity fuze, the same code generator is utilized for the transmitter and the decoder, a suitable delay in the line to the latter affording detection at a particular range. A bi-phase code as in Specification 1,432,541 is used in the embodiments. In one embodiment a bi-phase code generator 3 feeds a microwave transmitter and, via rangedelay 6, to a balanced mixer 2, with a target at the range corresponding to delay 6 the output of the mixer is a series of pulses of constant phase at ZF. A one-bit delay 7 is introduced into one path from the mixer to a phase-detector 6. If the inputs thereto are in phase the output is a D.C. voltage of one polarity and are applied to an integrator 9, and thence to a low-pass filter 10 (for rejecting out-of-range target signals) and a threshold circuit 11 to trigger a fuze. An alternative embodiment utilizes surface-wave delay lines between the output of mixer 2 and the upper junction of mixer 2 and delay 7, Fig. 2 (not shown), and is useful when the wanted signal is buried in noise.
