Abstract
1512702 Controlling light RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 11 Dec 1975 [19 Feb 1975] 6968/75 Heading G2F [Also in Divisions G5 and H4] A pair of inter-digitated electrodes is provided on each of two parallel opposed walls of a nematic liquid crystal cell whereby fields can be applied parallel to each wall to promote homogeneous alignment or, by connecting each pair of electrodes in common, a field can be applied perpendicular to the wall to promote homotropic alignment. The electrode fingers of one pair are inclined, e.g. at 90 degrees, to those of the other pair so that the resulting homogeneous alignments are nonparallel, giving a twisted nematic structure with optical rotary power. Such a cell disposed together with a retardation plate between polarizers provides a switchable colour filter e.g. for use with a monochrome cathode ray tube for a frame sequential colour display, but switching time must be less than frame flyback time. Selective switching of different areas of the cell is effected by using a plurality of pairs of inter-digitated electrodes, for example to provide a number of bands and to reduce the required switching speed in the abovementioned colour display, or to provide a coincidence addressed X-Y matrix or alphanumeric display device.
