Abstract

1512637 Vitreous fertilizer STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 29 July 1975 [30 July 1974] 33573/74 Headings C1M and C1B A particulate fertilizer comprises a vitreous matrix including P 2 O 5 as a glass-forming oxide and modifying oxides selected from alkali metal and alkaline earth metal oxides and including at least one of K 2 O, CaO and MgO, the matrix incorporating nitrogen as calcium cyanamide, and the matrix being soluble in water so that, on immersion in water, the constituents are slowly released into solution. The glass may consist of, in mole per cent, K 2 O 10-35,CaO+MgO 18-50 and P 2 O 5 37-55. The calcium cyanamide may be added as powder to molten glass at, e.g., about 800‹C. in N 2 . The calcium cyanamide particles may initially be coated with a metaphosphate glass of lower softening point than the matrix glass. The fertilizer may be heated to below the glass softening point and exposed to boric oxide vapour to form a boron phosphate surface layer (e.g. 0À1-1Á in thickness), so that the fertilizer, when immersed in water, has an induction period before the nutrient release period, in which induction period little or no nutrient is released. Optional ingredients of the fertilizer include fungicides and trace nutrient elements (so that deficiency diseases in livestock are treated by fertilizing the animal's fodder). The fertilizer may be used, instead of applying it to soil, to treat water used in hydroponic plant growth.
