Abstract

1511745 Friction clutches FRANCAISE DU FERODO SA 2 July 1975 [5 July 1974] 27921/75 Heading F2C In a diaphragm-spring friction clutch wherein a diaphragm spring 11 is fulcrummed between annular beads 35, 32 on a clutch cover 10 and a flange 27 of a retaining ring 26 respectively and the ring 26 has arms 29 projecting axially through apertures 24, 30 in the spring 11 and cover 10 respectively and are bent over at their ends to secure the parts together, spring means urge the ring 26 into engagement with the diaphragm spring 11 with a force which exceeds the reaction of the diaphragm spring on the ring 26 during clutch disengagement. As shown the spring means is provided by the internal resilience of the retaining ring 26. In Figs. 6-8 (not shown) the ends of the arms 29 are bent radially inwardly and a belleville spring washer or elastic ring is interposed between the ends of the arms and the clutch cover to provide the spring means. In Figs. 9-11 (not shown) the the spring means comprise a ring (55) interposed between the ends of the arms 29 and radial projections on the cover 10. The radial projections on the cover 10 are positioned circumferentially mid-way between each pair of arms 29. In Figs. 13-15 (not shown) the spring means are provided by resilient tabs bent out of the clutch cover against which the ends of the arms 29 engage. In this embodiment the retaining ring is assembled with a bayonet action. The clutch may be of the type having the diaphragm spring 11 positioned axially between the clutch cover 10 and a presser plate 17 or of the type in which the diaphragm spring 11 is positioned externally to the clutch cover 10 (Fig. 5, not shown). The presser plate is connected to the clutch cover by the usual tangential straps.
