Abstract

Electroconductive metallic inner surfaces of large-volume containers are electropolished zone-wise. In the process, a flow of current is generated and maintained in a bath fluid serving as the electrolyte. The metallic surface connected to the anode of a DC source is covered entirely or in part by the bath fluid. A metal electrode connected to the cathode of the DC source is completely immersed in the bath fluid, the metal electrode being positioned at a small distance from the inner surface of the container, and the container and the metal electrode being in a state of slow relative movement. In this arrangement, the metal electrode is fixed and the surface of the container revolves slowly about the longitudinal axis of the metal electrode, or the surface of the container is fixed and the metal electrode sweeps the surface of the container. That part of the cathodic metal electrode which during the electropolishing process faces away from the surface portion to be polished is screened with the aid of an electrically non-conductive material, so that the current lines between the cathodic metal electrode and the anodic surface are concentrated and cover the shortest distance from the cathode to the anode.
