Brake mechanism; gear cases. -In cycles &c. in which the driving-gear is enclosed in a gear-case forming part of the frame, the driving and rear axles are connected by a tie-rod connexion in the form of a gearcase, formed in two parts adapted to be engaged by pressure, and enclosing the driving gear, a back-pedalling brake and means to tension the driving chain. The driving- wheel is arranged for ready detachment. A forged or stamped-up sheet-metal gear box 1 with raised edges and ribs is secured to the crank hanger 5, to the upright tube at the rear of the machine and to a tie-piece 5<1> brazed to the bottom stay-rod 21 opposite to the gear case. Independent ball bearings are supported respectively in a cover 15 in the gear case and in a socket opposite. A spindle 10 passes through the latter and the wheel hub and is screwed into a member 11 which has dogs 16, 17 to engage recesses 18 in the wheel hub to effect the driving connexion. On the piece 11 is screwed a sleeve 13 on to which are independently screwed a sprocket-wheel 15 and a brake-drum 28. The driving-chain 4 is tensioned by a wheel 25 engaging the lower rim of the chain and journaled on an annulus 22 which is pivoted at 23 on the gear case and urged by a spiral spring 27. A bandbrake secured at 32 to the gear case passes round the drum 28 and is connected to a rod passing through a guide to a crank arm 34 which may be operated by back pedalling. The gear case is closed by a forged or stamped sheet-metal cover 3 which can be forced into position on the fixed part.
