Abstract

1506959 Lead-through insulators; hermetic seals BRITISH NUCLEAR FUELS Ltd 7 July 1976 [16 July 1975] 29845/75 Headings H2C and H2E An assembly for leading a shielded electrical conductor through a vessel wall comprises an inner ceramic sleeve 10 in which a conductor 12 is located and to which the conductor is sealed, and an outer ceramic sleeve 13 carrying a ring 14 serving to engage and seal an aperture in the vessel wall, the adjacent faces of sleeves 10 and 13 being metallized and the metallization on the sleeves being connected together to form a seal and to shield electrostatically conductor 12. As shown, the metallization on the sleeves is connected together by soldered or brazed joints 15, 16 and conductor 12 is sealed to sleeve 10 by a hard soldered joint 11 at a flange carried by the conductor. The inner sleeve may be provided with an annular recess (17), Fig. 2 (not shown), to limit the capillary movement of solder or braze at the joints (15a), (16a). The metallization is applied by conventional means, for example by applying a medium containing platinum or molybdenum and heating the sleeves. It extends over the end faces of the outer sleeve 13.
